When is Lunar New Year 2027?

Lunar New Year’s Day, the first day of the first month of the lunisolar calendar, falls on Saturday, February 6, 2027 for Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) and Vietnamese Tết. Celebrating Korean Seollal? Your big day comes one day later, on Sunday, February 7, 2027, according to the Korea Aerospace Administration’s official 2027 calendar.

Why is Korean Seollal on a different day in 2027?

It all comes down to the Moon and the clock. The new year begins on the day of the new moon, and which day that is depends on the local time zone. The February 2027 new moon happens at 15:56 UTC on February 6. That is late on February 6 in Beijing (UTC+8) and Hanoi (UTC+7), but already 12:56 a.m. on February 7 in Seoul (UTC+9). So China and Vietnam start the year on February 6, and Korea starts it on February 7.

How long does Lunar New Year last?

Longer than you might think. Traditional celebrations last 15 days, from New Year’s Day through the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month. In 2027 that is February 6 to February 20. In the United States and Canada, community parades and festivals are often held on the weekends before and after New Year’s Day, so many cities have events from late January through late February. Plenty of chances to catch a lion dance.

How is the date of Lunar New Year set?

The traditional Chinese calendar is lunisolar: months follow the phases of the Moon, and each month starts on the day of the new moon, while the year stays in step with the seasons. Lunar New Year usually falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, which places it between January 21 and February 21 each year. That’s why the date moves around from year to year.
