A lion can’t really see until someone paints its eyes, and at CultureFest! Lunar New Year at the Penn Museum in Philadelphia, you can watch that moment happen. This family festival spreads through the museum and its outdoor spaces. The 2027 date hasn’t been announced yet; the 45th annual festival was held Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
What to expect
The day opened with a “Dotting the Eye” ceremony at 11 a.m., when the lions are awakened, and closed with a lion dance finale.
In between, you’ll find dance and music performances, storytelling, art-making, tai chi (a slow, flowing martial art) and a marketplace. It’s presented with Penn’s American Center for Asian Students and Center for East Asian Studies.
