Seol, Lunar New Year Celebration is the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago’s take on Seollal (Korean Lunar New Year), held in the north suburb of Wheeling, IL. Imagine trying on a hanbok (traditional Korean clothing), learning a formal bow, then warming up with a bowl of soup. The 2027 dates haven’t been announced yet; the event returned in 2026, and in 2025 it ran Saturday, February 1, starting at 2 p.m.
What to expect
This is a hands-on, family-friendly afternoon in BISCO Hall. You can play traditional games such as yutnori (a board game played with sticks), jegi (a shuttlecock kicking game), ttakji (a folded-paper flipping game) and tuho (arrow tossing), then visit the craft stations.
There are hanbok try-ons and lessons in sebae (the New Year’s bow), and guests who arrive in hanbok receive a gift. Tastings include tteokguk (rice cake soup), sikhye (sweet rice drink) and other traditional treats, plus Korean drumming and dance. The 2026 edition even added a K-pop dance lesson, so stretch first.
